GCM Resources plc is a British company supported by major hedge funds and banks including UBS, Credit Suisse, Barclays Bank, LR Global, and Argos Greater Europe Fund. It is planning an open pit coal mining in Phulbari, Bangladesh bringing massive displacement, loss of livelihood and environmental devastation.

As you probably already know that a British company, GCM Resources (formerly known as Asia Energy) is aggressively trying to secure a deal with Bangladesh Government to capture the biggest coal reserve of Bangladesh in Phulbari, Dinajpur. The proposed deal will pay merely 6% of royalty to Bangladesh and 94% of revenue will be taken by GCM! Moreover they will enjoy 9 years of tax holiday to further increase their profit! The project will roughly bring $200 billion to GCM and only $7 billion to Bangladesh in terms of financial benefit.

Dhaka, June 20 (bdnews24.com)– Ruling Awami League MP Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim has spoken out strongly in favour of coal extraction regardless of any environmental damage it may cause.

The senior leader also criticised those protesting coal extraction, especially through open-pit method, and said extraction was necessary to boost power generation.

"There are some quarters, perpetually opposed to coal extraction, who claim that it will lead to environmental destruction," he said in the parliament on Sunday.

The government is considering ‘positively’ a new proposal of the UK-based Asia Energy which offered the government only 10 per cent stake in the Phulbari coal field for operating an open-pit mine, said sources in the government.

Besides, the government has also engaged the UNDP and German GTZ, which has supported open-pit mining in Bangladesh, for conducting a feasibility study for an open pit coal mine on the north flank of Barapukuria coal field, they said.
